The Living Room Theatre

About

In a world where women’s lives are too often swept under the carpet, The Living Room Theatre brings them into the light.

Led by Artistic Director Michelle St Anne, LRT creates thought-provoking, sensory performances that challenge systemic attitudes to violence, inequality, and injustice. Working from its home at 21 Shepherd Street, Marrickville, LRT blends theatre, dance, and music to reveal how trauma and violence are intertwined with social mechanisms, creating space for empathy, dignity, and transformation.

Through nonlinear, multi-sensory experiences, LRT explores how the affective body relates to objects, memory, and environment, accessing joy, love, beauty, and rage to transcend shame.

The company provides a home for collaboration, vulnerability, and artistic growth—for research examining trauma and the female body—and presents performances that move audiences and embolden change.

Our Vision

To be an ever-evolving space where artists and audiences come together to transform understanding—through fearless storytelling, embodied research, and the pursuit of truth, beauty, and justice.

Our Mission

We provide artists with a home for collaboration, vulnerability, and growth, engaging in artistic and scholarly research that examines how violence and trauma persist in relation to the female body. Through this work, we develop and present performances that move audiences and embolden change.

Our Purpose

To reveal and confront the ways violence and trauma are bound to mechanisms of inequality and injustice—making space for empathy, dignity, and transformation.

Our Platform

We explore how the affective body is architecturally framed in relation to objects and the emotional resonance they hold. Through nonlinear, multi-sensory experiences, we access feelings of joy, love, beauty, and rage—both in artists and audiences—to transcend shame.

We defy genre, disciplinary boundaries, and audience expectations, expanding the theatre canon to offer space for new, diverse work.

We prioritise:

  • Collaboration: Challenging how we learn and create together.

  • Integrity: Working with emotional honesty and accountability to artists, audiences, and the community.

  • Connection: Shattering the divide between audience, performer, and narrative.

  • Impact: Embracing the logic and power of nonlinear, multi-sensory storytelling.
