About ‘Ostinato’

Step into the haunting world of “Ostinato,” an innovative performance piece that dares to confront society’s unsettling indifference towards violence. Picture the stage in total blackout, where fleeting torchlight reveals a woman’s broken body, the air thick with echoed questions: “Why was she there?” and “At her age, she should have known better.”

This profound exploration by St. Anne’s Practice uses spoken word, physicality, and sound to illuminate the experiences of those rendered invisible—specifically, the aging, Asian woman often overlooked in narratives of violence. As the piece critiques our narrow definitions of “worthy” victims, it invites audiences to grapple with the harsh truths of societal disregard.

Through immersive jazz improvisation intertwined with theatrical experimentation, “Ostinato” shifts the focus from sight to sound, challenging how we listen and engage with uncomfortable realities. In a world driven by sensationalism, this performance reflects on the alarming statistic that 59 women have lost their lives to male violence this year alone.

Join us as we navigate the shadows of indifference, urging a collective reckoning with the stories often left unheard. “Ostinato” promises a transformative experience that lingers long after the final note fades.
