Between Voices #4
Featuring three ensembles, a duo, a duo and a quartet, working across the worlds of jazz, composition and improvisation.
Truffle Boils
Peter Farrar – saxophones
Tom Avgenicos – trumpet
Sam Dobson – double bass
Jodie Michael – drums
The Truffle Boils is one of Sydney’s unjustly obscure jazz treasures. The quartet of virtuosi has cohered into an intensely passionate, fiercely swinging unit, mixing some band originals with rarely heard classics from legendary immortals like Marion Brown, Ellington, Mingus and others.
Featuring the alto sax/trumpet magic of Peter Farrar & Tom Avgenicos, and the rhythm/bass engine room of Jodie Michael and Sam Dobson.
Laura Altman & Cass Pyc
Laura Altman – clarinet etc
Cass Pyc – guitar
Laura Altman (Gadigal/Wangal country, Sydney) is a clarinetist, improviser, composer and song-writer whose musical output reaches across exploratory, contemporary classical, and folk-adjacent music scenes. She has a rich solo practice which centres on an intuitive approach to the clarinet, underpinned by a curiosity with resonance and feedback.
Cass Pyc (Dharawal country, Wollongong) is a guitarist whose practice involves utilising preparations to draw complex rhythms, and resonances from the instrument. His improvising experience spans prog metal riffage to avant minimalism.
This is Cass and Laura’s debut performance as a duo.
Sam Gill & Phillippa Murphy-Haste
Sam Gill – saxophones
Phillippa Murphy-Haste – clarinets
One of the most sensual and transportative duos in Sydney.

Come and misbehave.
Art isn’t comfortable
here — and neither,
probably, are you.
That’s exactly the point.

“We are not a home for creativity. We are a home for art that won’t stay quiet.”
