Different Voices #3: Tunings of Place

For the third instalment of Different Voices, curator-performers Daniel Raymond and Alex Tucker present two ensembles whose work explores sound as landscape, memory, and discovery.

Launching their second album, Mallee, the collaborative project of Freya Schack-Arnott and Ben Ward performs music for cello, double bass, nyckelharpa and synthesised sound. Drawing on site-specific improvisations in Menindee, Cobar and Wilcannia, their work investigates radical tuning systems, spectral resonance and richly textured sonic environments, blurring the boundaries between acoustic and electronic sound.

The Cloud of Unknowing

Joining them is The Cloud of Unknowing, featuring Jim Denley, Sam Dobson and Alex Tucker. Inspired by improvisation’s embrace of uncertainty, the trio navigates a continually shifting musical terrain where saxophone, bass, percussion and found objects converge in spontaneous acts of listening and invention.

Together, these artists present a program of adventurous contemporary music that is grounded in place yet open to the unknown; finding new voices in resonance, texture and the spaces between certainty and mystery.

“when I say darkness, I mean a lacking of knowing: as all things that thou knowest not, or hast forgotten, is dark to thee… And for this reason it is called, not a cloud of the air, but a cloud of unknowing…”

Sam Dobson – double bass
Alex Tucker – drums
