Birds of a Feather Soirée – Celebrating the First Birthday of 21 Shepherd
A year ago, 21 Shepherd became home.
Not in the neat, finished sense of the word. Not with everything known, named, funded, mapped out, or guaranteed. But home in the way that matters most: a place where people gather, make, imagine, argue, dream, rehearse, risk, and return.
On the 23 October at 7:00pm, Birds of a Feather Soirée celebrates the first birthday of The Living Room Theatre’s home at 21 Shepherd.
We celebrate a year of quiet chaos—the beautiful, exhausting, often invisible work of keeping a living artistic space alive. The chairs moved. The lights adjusted. The conversations that ran longer than expected. The ideas that arrived half-formed and somehow became possible. The art that found its way into the room, and the life that inevitably came with it.
Because an artistic home is never simply a building.
It is a question.
What can happen here?
Who might walk through the door?
What do we have the courage to make?
What do we hold onto?
What do we let change?
And how do we continue when the future refuses to give us certainty?
There have been uncertainties, of course. There still are. There always will be. But perhaps that is not the opposite of vision. Perhaps uncertainty is the space vision needs in order to breathe.
21 Shepherd is a home for artistic life and vision in all its imperfect, unruly forms. A place where making art does not happen separately from living, but alongside it: with its interruptions, its mess, its laughter, its doubts, its practicalities, its sudden joys and impossible ambitions.
This night is not just about looking back at what has been built.
It is about gathering around what is still becoming.
Like birds of a feather, we come together—not because we are all the same, but because something in us recognises something in one another. A hunger for connection. A belief in the value of making. A willingness to sit with the unfinished. A desire to keep imagining, even when we don’t yet know exactly how the story ends.
So here’s to the first year.
To the quiet chaos.
To the art.
To the life.
To the vision.
To the questions still unanswered.
To the uncertainties that keep us awake—and perhaps keep us open.
And to 21 Shepherd: a home that is still finding its shape because the people inside it are still dreaming.
Happy first birthday.
May the doors remain open, the conversations remain mischievous, the work remain perculiar, and the future remain just uncertain enough to invite us to create it together.
