Ms Kitteridge & Bok Choy by The Living Room Theatre is a series for jazz and experimental musicians to strut their stuff in a new affordable jazz venue. The ambition is to build on the legacy and vibe of SIMA at the Strawberry Hills Hotel back in the 90’s and add to the music scene of Dulwich Hill with a theatrical touch.

Niki Johnson’s solo set explores a simple and broad theme of ‘resonance’ through composition and improvisation for percussion instruments such as vibraphone, glass bowls and marbles. These musical pieces aim to pair and repair different long sounds and humming rhythms. This provides a space to explore the feeling of having tiny metal earworms dancing in the eardrums, or perhaps having the heart strings stretched to the limits.

Niki Johnson is a percussionist and composer-performer whose experimental musical practice incorporates interdisciplinary collaboration, improvisation, contemporary classical repertoire, and performance art. She collaborates with fine-artists and musicians to create new artworks existing in the liminal spaces of art mediums. Her current PhD research at Monash University explores percussionists’ collaborations with sculptors and designers, and the process of co-creating, and composing for new sculptural musical instruments.
