The Landlord Project: Our Future is Here!

Introducing The Living Room’s New Residence: A Bespoke Venue & Artistic Research Centre

Michelle St Anne, artistic director and founder of the inner west theatre group The Living Room Theatre, is set to transform 1A Hardie Street, Summer Hill, into “The Landlord”—a vibrant home for the local creative community. With a five-year vision, Michelle aims to awaken this previously abandoned space to champion the voices of the silenced.

“My works over the past two decades have very much been about championing the voices of the silenced, and that’s why this space, The Landlord, resonated with me. It’s been an abandoned space for some time – she’s asleep, I can feel her, and it’s time to wake her up.”

The second floor will be dedicated to The Living Room Theatre, featuring a performance space and dance floor for new Australian work. This venue will also serve as a centre for artistic research, fostering connections between artists, audiences, and the community.

The Benefits

The Landlord Project will provide a secure and inspiring environment for The Living Room Theatre (LRT) to thrive. Here’s what you can expect:

  • A Safe Space for Creativity: We’re committed to cultivating an atmosphere that encourages courageous and audacious collaboration, allowing artists to push boundaries and explore new ideas.
  • Increased Employment Opportunities: Our venue will create more job openings for artists, with a strong focus on the feminist canon, supporting a diverse and inclusive workforce.
  • Cultural Vibrancy: With a unique offering for the night-time economy, The Landlord Project will renew the cultural landscape of Summer Hill, making it a must-visit destination.

Community Access

We recognize that contemporary work can sometimes feel alienating. The Landlord Project will prioritize education and access through informal platforms such as artist talks, workshops, and previews, allowing the community to engage directly with our artists and practitioners.

Building Capacity

We are dedicated to empowering the next generation of creatives. Our Capacity Building Workshops will support early career choreographers, theatrical artists, and composers, providing essential resources for their artistic journeys.

Ms. St Anne, currently on the committee for the Inner West Creative Network, has been inspired to develop The Landlord space following insights into the critical needs of the local artist community, including affordable venues and collaborative spaces.

Studio for Community Use

To further our commitment to the independent arts community, we will offer studio space for hire. This much-needed rehearsal resource will be available to independent companies, visiting artists, and scholars, ensuring that our creative community has the tools they need to thrive.

Join Us in Shaping the Future!

The Landlord Project is not just a space; it’s a movement towards a more vibrant, inclusive, and collaborative artistic landscape. We invite you to be part of this exciting journey as we build a dynamic community hub for creativity and connection. Together, we can transform the way art is experienced and appreciated.

Welcome to our future!
